"The drive toward excellence has found a valuable ally in robotics.”

Italian ceramics are globally synonymous with quality and craftsmanship. GSI?Ceramica shows how this heritage can evolve through intelligent automation. In an interview with iiMagazine, Plant Manager Roberto?Ceccarelli explains how KUKA robotics, strong partnerships, and advanced technologies help safeguard quality, safety, and the long term value of Made in Italy — with the ambition of bringing Italian perfection to the world.

What does Made in Italy mean for GSI Ceramica today?

Roberto Ceccarelli: "We strongly believe in Made in Italy, because the quality standards we have here must reach every part of the world. It’s about respect for the product and, above all, for the people who use it. But it is also an expression of who we are and what we aspire to become in the long term."

Roberto Ceccarelli looks ahead to the factory of the future: for the Plant Manager, automation is not an end in itself, but the key to carrying the quality and ambition of ‘Made in Italy’ into the future.

GSI has invested heavily in automation in recent years. How does that align with this identity?

Ceccarelli: "The drive toward excellence – that distinctly Italian desire to do things properly – has found a valuable ally in robotics. Today, automation is at the heart of our production. It delivers efficiency and consistent quality without betraying our origins. Robots guarantee stable standards, while our people raise the bar of quality every single day."

The decision to choose KUKA was not purely technical, but strategic. It was about trust, support, and flexibility.

        Roberto Ceccarelli, GSI Ceramica

What does this automation look like in practice?

Ceccarelli: "Sacmi systems and 40 KUKA robots integrated by Gaiotto are now operating across casting, finishing, glazing, and in plant handling. They ensure repeatable and consistent processes. For us, this reproducibility is essential to guaranteeing the highest level of quality over time."

Where did you see the greatest step forward through this technology?

Ceccarelli: "The real step change came with the introduction of high pressure machinery and robotic systems. Processes were standardized, quality became uniform, and operators’ manual, physically demanding activities were significantly reduced. That fundamentally transformed our production."

Automated production lines increase efficiency and safety while relieving employees of physically demanding tasks.

What role does robotics play in meeting your quality standards?

Ceccarelli: "Our product must be impeccable. Investing in robotics and automation protects that ambition by minimizing risk and ensuring the highest standards. Even details the customer will never see matter to us – they are a guarantee of that special something our customers recognize and value in our products."

KUKA came to us, engaged with our situation and shared its expertise in a targeted way. That’s what makes the difference: it’s not just about technology, it’s about the human relationship.

        Roberto Ceccarelli, GSI Ceramica

How has automation affected safety and work inside the plant?

Ceccarelli: "There is no longer any manual handling of heavy loads. We have eliminated strenuous tasks, reduced risk, and restored dignity and safety to work. At the same time, roles have evolved: today our operators are specialists in robot operation and maintenance."

Why did you choose KUKA as a partner?

Ceccarelli: "Choosing KUKA was not just a technical decision - it was a strategic one. Together with Sacmi and Gaiotto, we were able to address complex challenges. What I appreciated most was the reliability and the willingness to solve problems together - not simply installing robots, but building real solutions."

Automation now sits at the heart of our production, as it delivers efficiency and quality while preserving our heritage at the same time. Robots ensure consistent standards.

        Roberto Ceccarelli, GSI Ceramica

What makes this partnership special from your perspective?

Ceccarelli: "It comes down to trust, support, and flexibility. Customized training was also essential for us. KUKA came to us, understood our situation, and organized dedicated training sessions. That makes the difference: it’s not just technology – it’s the human relationship."

Between tradition and high-tech: KUKA robots take over precise, manual tasks along the entire production line, transforming craftsmanship into reliable, repeatable processes.

Where is GSI Ceramica heading next?

Ceccarelli: "We are continuing to grow. We are installing a third kiln and investing in automated logistics and traceability. Technology must support people, increase output, and sustainably defend the value of Made in Italy."
