The classic tasks of industrial robots include loading components or transferring them from one place to another. Increasing demands and complexity in the manufacturing industry require industrial robots to be able to detect and identify parts as quickly as possible, in addition to simple loading and unloading. This is where bin picking comes into play.?Bin picking comprises three steps in which the randomly arranged objects are recognized, picked up and placed in a new position.
The first step is to determine whether the parts are structured, semi-structured or chaotically arranged. The vision system must analyze the environment and detect the position of the individual components. To enable it to do so, the component must be predefined and values such as the lighting conditions must be imported into the system via CAD data.
In the second step, the data from the vision system are transferred to the robot controller. This then takes over the planning of the optimal robot path as well as the gripping and removal strategy. In this, it pursues the overall goal of emptying the bin completely by picking all the workpieces.
Finally, the robot arm must set the parts down at a predefined point or load them directly into a downstream machine tool for further processing.
