Fully automated cold test stand
KUKA realized fully automated test benches for combustion engines for the BMW Group plant in Hams Hall, UK. The eight-cylinder (S68B44T0) and twelve-cylinder (N74B68U2 and N74B68M2) engines are tested on these so-called cold test benches.
For more than 35 years, KUKA has been successfully integrating assembly and test systems for the automotive industry internationally and optimizing their production through efficient automation solutions.
High degree of innovation
The commissioned KUKA team of experts based in Bremen specializes in test systems for powertrain components in cars and trucks - such as engines, cylinder heads, axles, transmissions and steering systems. In addition, the team also deals with test systems in the e-mobility sector, for example for batteries and electric drives.

In this short project lead time, a highly complex test bench with many innovative technical solutions was realized. The BMW Group and KUKA are building on a long-standing partnership and were therefore able to combine the best of past years with innovative solutions. These include a newly developed drive train, a flexible electrical adaptation and the newly developed KUKA measurement software XCT3.0 with a web-based add-on.
Comprehensive range of tests for the highest quality
Among other things, the intake, exhaust, oil chamber, all sensors and actuators and the control unit are mechanically and electrically adapted and tested in the test stand. Faults are also detected in drive-synchronous noises from the valve train, camshaft, etc. through vibration and order analysis using a combination of laser and microphone systems.
