I kicked off my career in engineering when I started a HNC course at Dudley College in electrical design. I did two years of an apprenticeship as a Controls Engineer when KUKA Systems was known as Thompson Friction Welding, before deciding to pursue a career in software instead.
Starting a software engineering course at the University of Wolverhampton, I came back to KUKA as an apprentice software engineer.
The five-year course enabled me to get a brilliant insight into the company before working in a full-time position within the company. Many of the people I work with have moved through the ranks with me, so the atmosphere and working relationships are great.
The training and development at KUKA has been invaluable too, offering courses in software, robotics, and I’ve even been lucky enough to visit the KUKA head office in Augsburg to complete a course in programming. On top of this, I’ve had the pleasure to work on projects for some big names like Allen-Bradley and Siemens.
Despite the technical industry, working at KUKA can be really varied. I am proud to have worked on a nuclear decommissioning project in Cumbria, as well as the design of joystick robot controllers. Working here has me excited about being part of the future, and I’m really looking forward to getting involved in new technologies like virtual reality.
